The Separation of the Wheat and the Tares: Trusting God’s Timing

In Matthew 13:24–30, Jesus tells a story about a farmer who planted good seed in his field. But while everyone slept, an enemy came and sowed weeds—called tares—among the wheat. When both began to grow, the servants noticed and asked if they should pull the weeds out. The farmer told them to wait until harvest, because pulling them too soon might uproot the good plants along with the bad.

Later, Jesus explained that this story isn’t really about farming at all—it’s about life and the world we live in (Matthew 13:36–43). The wheat represents those who belong to God, and the tares represent those who don’t. Both grow together for a time, but at the end of the age, God Himself will separate them.

As moms, it can be hard to see evil and chaos in the world and not want to fix everything. We long to protect our children, to pull out every “weed” we see, to make life pure and peaceful. But Jesus reminds us that's His work, and it will happen in His perfect timing.

Our job is to keep growing in faith, to nurture the good seed God has planted in our hearts and in our homes. Even when the world feels messy, we can rest in knowing that the Lord sees every heart, every act of kindness, every moment of love sown in faith.

At harvest time, He will gather His wheat into His barn (eternal life). Until then, let’s keep trusting the One who tends the field.

Matthew 13:30 (KJV)

“Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.”

A Simple Prayer

Dear Lord,

Help me to trust Your timing when I don’t understand what’s happening around me. Teach me to focus on growing in faith and planting good seeds in my home, even when the world feels uncertain. Remind me that You see every effort, every prayer, and every act of love. Keep my heart steady as I wait for Your perfect harvest. Amen.
